  • Nutrigenomix

Nutrition Assessment Clinic is excited to announce that our dietitians are now offering an exciting new service called Nutrigenomix. It is a simple genetic saliva test that will allow for personalized nutrition recommendations that are based on your DNA! You may purchase the test here but need to go to the clinic to provide the sample and may choose other services at that time.

    How Can I Benefit?

The benefits of genetic testing for genes related to nutritional health are: Reliable peer-reviewed, published research shows that DNA-based dietary advice increases motivation and adherence to nutritional recommendations, compared to general advice. Based at the University of Toronto Research and Princess Margaret Hospital Genetics Lab. Your healthcare provider will counsel you on eating more – or less—of certain foods based on your DNA, to:
    • Decrease your risk of developing chronic diseases
    • Optimize your health, performance and fertility
    • Optimize your plant-based diet
The Nutrigenomix saliva tests 45 genes related to nutrition and health and can direct your personalized diet prescription by a Registered Dietitian.  The 40-page booklet you receive from your test can be tailored in advice for general nutrition, pregnancy, sports nutrition or plant-based personalized nutrition for vegetarians and vegans.

    How Does It Work?

Although you can order the saliva test directly here, the best option to make optimal use of the Nutrigenomix testing results is to go through our usual assessment and nutrition planning process. We take the saliva sample at the first visit and it will be back by your 3rd visit and we incorporate it into the nutrition assessment information we have already analysed for you (dietary intake and body composition analysis). The test gives results for 45 genes related to nutrition. Some are physical activity related and some are lactose or gluten intolerance or Vitamin and Mineral metabolism. If you have a low intake of B12 or folate from your nutrient intake analysis and the genetic results show you do not metabolize B12 or folate properly. Then we address this.  We may ask your family Dr. to check your B12 and folate blood values based on your intake, any medications and genetics.  If we can't find the right foods for you we may suggest a supplements.    Some of this is based on what you tell us about family history of diseases and our insight into nutrition and health.
